Stone Ice Storage, Gyeongju
경주 석빙고 · 慶州 石氷庫

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA seokbinggo is a storehouse built for keeping ice; this one stands lengthwise on a north-south axis atop the northern rampart within Banwolseong Fortress in Gyeongju. Entering through the doorway set at the south end, one descends by a staircase inside. Toward the interior the floor slopes so that water could drain away. The roof is semicircular, with ventilation holes made at three points to let air pass to the outside. A stone stele and the lintel stone at the entrance record in detail that in 1738, the 14th year of King Yeongjo of Joseon, Jo Myeong-gyeom rebuilt in stone what had been a wooden ice house, and that four years later it was moved from the west to its present site; the structure is thought to date from this time. It is also regarded as an outstanding masterpiece in both scale and technique.
