Three-story Stone Pagoda in Hyohyeon-dong, Gyeongju
경주 효현동 삼층석탑 · 慶州 孝峴洞 三層石塔

The site where this pagoda stands is said to have once been Aegongsa Temple, where King Beopheung of Silla is said to have practised Buddhism as a monk until his death, but the surrounding area has since become farmland and no trace of the temple remains. The pagoda has a three-storey body set on a two-tiered platform. Each of the four sides of the platform bears a carved pillar-shaped decoration, and its proportions are heavy in relation to the body, giving an overall impression of weightiness. On the body, the corners of the main stone of each storey are carved to imitate pillars, and the roof stones curve upward slightly at the four corners, forming a light, graceful line. The underside of each roof stone has four tiers of supports, and the carving throughout is fine and shallow, features characteristic of Unified Silla stone pagodas of around the ninth century.
