Rock-carved Seated Buddha in Songhyeon-dong, Changnyeong
창녕 송현동 마애여래좌상 · 昌寧 松峴洞 磨崖如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a rock-carved Buddha, its front cut in relief to project from a large boulder, using the rock itself as the halo representing the light radiating from the Buddha's whole body. Atop the bare head is a large topknot-shaped protuberance, and the round face is full and plump, giving a gentle impression. The shoulders are broad and squared, and although the arms and chest are wide, their volume is subdued, giving a calm impression. The robe covers the left shoulder and leaves the right shoulder bare, clinging thinly to the body, but the stepped, formulaic treatment of the drapery folds reduces its realism. The hand gesture, with the right hand placed on the knee and the fingertips pointing towards the ground, is the earth-touching gesture, symbolising the subjugation of demons. Overall, this stone Buddha appears to follow the style of the principal Buddha of Seokguram Grotto in its face and thinly clinging robe, but with less realism and vigour than the Seokguram Buddha, reflecting the style of late Unified Silla Buddhist sculpture.
