Flagpole supports (danggan jiju) are erected at the entrance to a temple. When the temple held a ceremony, a banner called a dang was hung there; the long pole from which the banner hung is called a danggan, and the two stone pillars standing to either side to brace the pole are called danggan jiju. Standing beside the road that runs along Uiam Lake back towards Chuncheon Station within the city, these flagpole supports are simple and unadorned. Between the two facing pillars sits a two-tiered base stone for the pole: the lower tier bears a round carved design, and the upper tier is encircled with a carving of sixteen lotus petals. The tops of the pillars form a semicircle, and on one of them traces remain of a groove that once held the pole in place. Judging by the technique used to dress the stone and carve the lotus petals, this is presumed to be a work of the mid-Goryeo period.
