Three-story Stone Pagoda in Huimang-ri, Hongcheon
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a typical Goryeo-period three-storey stone pagoda with a three-storey body on a single-tier foundation. It originally stood behind Hongcheon Elementary School and was later moved to its present site at Hongcheon Art Museum, a plot that had served as the Hongcheon County Office from 1956 to 1986 and then as the Hongcheon-eup Office from 1986 to 2007. It has been repaired and is in good condition, but the roof stone was already broken. Two broad stone slabs are laid down, with the foundation and pagoda body set on top of them. Pillar shapes are carved at each corner of the middle stone of the foundation, with an additional pillar carving at the centre, and the topmost stone finishing the foundation has a slight slope on its upper surface. In the pagoda body, the body stone and roof stone of each storey are each carved from a single stone, and pillar shapes are carved at the corners of each body stone. Unfortunately, the third-storey body stone is missing, so the proportional reduction toward the upper storeys cannot be clearly observed. Four tiers of eaves supports are carved beneath each roof stone, and although the roof stones are not thick, the upward curve at the four corners is slight, giving no sense of lightness. As the carving throughout shows a weakened style, the pagoda is presumed to have been built sometime after the mid-Goryeo period.
