Flagpole Supports in Daechang-ri, Gangneung
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

These stand within the town of Gangneung; roof-tile fragments excavated nearby indicate that the area was once a temple site, but no detailed records survive. When a temple held a ceremony, a banner was hung at its entrance; the pole from which the banner was hung is called a flagpole, and the two stone posts that support the flagpole on either side are called flagpole supports. The present location is the original site, and the two posts now stand facing each other from north to south, 1 metre apart. The base that once supported the flagpole between the posts, and the platform, no longer survive, so the original appearance cannot be determined. Given that a rectangular stone has been placed at the base, the platform is presumed to have also been rectangular. The tops of the posts curve outward from the inner to the outer face, and at the centre of the inner upper part of each is a square hole for fixing the flagpole in place. Overall these flagpole supports show no trace of carved decoration, presenting a plain and simple appearance.
