Stone Seated Buddha of Dogapsa Temple, Yeongam
영암 도갑사 석조여래좌상 · 靈巖 道岬寺 石造如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a stone Buddha statue enshrined in Mireukjeon Hall at Dogapsa Temple in Yeongam-gun, South Jeolla Province. The body and the halo are carved from a single stone, in a technique resembling that of a rock-carved Buddha cut directly into a cliff face. The head is covered with small snail-shell curls, and a large topknot-shaped protuberance is prominently carved on the crown. The face is oval, with prominent eyelids, a broad nose and thick lips, giving an expression that is robust yet still smiling. The broad shoulders, flat chest and simplified curves of the body appear stiff and lack a sense of vitality. The robe leaves the right shoulder bare and is draped from the left shoulder across to the armpit, its few folds rendered in a rough, simple manner. At the centre of the slender oval halo is a lotus design, and small Buddha figures are carved at the top and on either side of the head; the carving on the halo is generally much simplified. The pedestal made to enshrine the statue is a plain square in form, though it is thought that it may originally have been an octagonal pedestal carved with a lotus design. Although the technique is somewhat stiff and formalised, the statue's facial expression conveys a warm sense of humanity. It appears to be a work of the mid-Goryeo period, faithfully inheriting the Buddha-image style of Unified Silla while also fully displaying the rough, simplified qualities characteristic of Goryeo.
