This is a stone standing Buddha that shares stylistic features with a series of large Buddha statues made in this area in the early Goryeo period. According to legend, at the end of Silla, Crown Prince Maui, grieving over the fall of his country, came to this place, made this Buddha statue, and then withdrew into Gaegolsan Mountain, while his younger sister made the rock-carved standing Buddha at Deokjusa Temple in Jecheon (treasure). The statue was made using five stones in all, with a single thin stone serving as its hat. The round face, arched eyebrows, long almond-shaped eyes, broad nose and thick lips reflect well the localised style that large Buddha statues took on in the early Goryeo period. By contrast with the face, the body shows a plainness, evident in the simple rendering of the robe's folds and in the depiction of the hands holding what appears to be a bead. Given the bold, massive appearance of this Buddha statue, it seems certain to have been produced against the backdrop of a newly risen national power.
