Iron Seated Buddha, Chungju
충주 철조여래좌상 · 忠州 鐵造如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis iron Buddha statue, 0.98m in height, is in the same style as the Iron Seated Buddha at Danhosa Temple (treasure), but with an even stronger emphasis on stern, solemn beauty. The head is covered with sharp, pointed spiral curls, and at the crown is a knot-shaped protuberance (yukgye, a cranial bump symbolising a Buddha's transcendent wisdom). The nearly triangular face, the long, wide eyes, and the figure-eight-shaped wrinkles running down to the tightly closed mouth all give a stern, dignified impression. The imposing upper body and the seated posture with the knees spread wide show a relatively well-balanced figure, but the expression is taut and somewhat exaggerated. The robe draped over both shoulders is symmetrical, its geometric folds rendered in regular lines that emphasise the statue's austerity. This is one of the iron Buddha statues that were popular from the late Unified Silla period into the early Goryeo period, and its schematic, formulaic expression suggests that it was made in the early Goryeo period.
