Stone Standing Buddha Triad at Anguksa Temple Site, Dangjin

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krAnguksa Temple is a former temple site located on Anguksan Mountain (also known as Eunbongsan Mountain); it is said to have been rebuilt in 1929, but was later abandoned again. About 200 metres from this site stands a large standing stone Buddha nearly 5 metres tall. The head wears a large square hat, and the face is awkwardly large in proportion to the body. The body of the Buddha is enlarged, with a reduced sense of human form, giving it the feel of a square pillar. The arms and hands, moreover, are attached to the body in a way that does not suit it, creating an unrealistic appearance. The right hand is held against the chest, while the left hand rests against the abdomen with the thumb and middle finger touching. On either side are bodhisattva figures attending the principal Buddha: the right-hand bodhisattva is buried up to the waist, and the left-hand one has lost only its head, otherwise following the same form as the principal Buddha. The triad well reflects the blocky, massed style of Buddhist statuary that was popular in the Chungcheong region during the Goryeo period, and is noted alongside the Stone Standing Buddha at Mireukri, Chungju (Treasure).
