Five-story Stone Pagoda in Jisan-dong, Gwangju
광주 지산동 오층석탑 · 光州 芝山洞 五層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone pagoda, dating to the late Unified Silla period, stands to the east of two pagodas that lie a considerable distance apart within the city of Gwangju. The area around the pagoda is said to be the site of a temple called Baekjusa, though no evidence has yet been found to confirm this. The pagoda consists of a five-story body set on a two-tier base, retaining the basic form of Silla stone pagodas. The base, which supports the structure, is assembled from several fitted stones, while the body stone and roof stone of each story are each a single piece. Notably, the eave-support tiers beneath the roof stones number five on the first story but are simplified to four from the second story up, a stylistic feature indicating that the pagoda dates to the late Unified Silla period. When the pagoda was dismantled and repaired in 1955, a reliquary (sarira) was found on top of the fourth-story roof stone, and further repairs in 1961 replaced some of the stones. It is an outstanding late Unified Silla stone pagoda, one of only a few five-story stone pagodas surviving in the Gwangju and South Jeolla region.
