Three-story Stone Pagoda in Bonggi-ri, Cheongdo
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a stone pagoda with a three-storey body set on a two-tiered base. The base slab and lower base are formed from a single stone, and the whole is made up of eight stones in all. Both the upper and lower bases have pillar shapes carved along the edges of every side, with two central pillars carved on the inner faces as well. The broad capping stone placed on top like a lid is likewise composed of eight stones, giving the whole a well-fitted structure. In the body section, the body stone and roof stone of each storey are each formed from a single stone; the first-storey body stone is disproportionately tall, while from the second storey the height decreases sharply, so that the overall proportions cannot be called handsome. The roof stones are broad and thin, with five tiers of eaves-support carved on the underside, and the eaves end in a horizontal line, giving a light, buoyant feel. Since two central pillars are carved on both the upper and lower bases, following the form of early stone pagodas, this pagoda is judged to be a work of the mid-eighth century, in the Unified Silla period.
