Three-story Stone Pagoda in Pyeonghwa-dong, Andong
안동 평화동 삼층석탑 · 安東 平和洞 三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a three-story stone pagoda in Pyeonghwa-dong, Andong, Gyeongsangbuk-do. Houses have since sprung up around it, so no trace remains of the temple site, and even the temple's name is unknown. The pagoda has a two-tiered base supporting the body, and it is notable that the lower tier is carved with beautiful arch-shaped niches (an-sang). The upper tier has an entirely unusual form: its upper surface slopes considerably and each corner is turned slightly upward, so that it looks almost like a roof stone. The body of the pagoda consists of a single stone for each story's body-stone and roof-stone; the roof stones have straight eaves, and small holes survive where wind chimes were once hung. At the top, only the square dew-basin, the finial's supporting base, and the inverted-bowl-shaped ornament above it remain of the original finial. With its wide roof stones, the pagoda appears very stable, and its proportions are beautiful overall. It is thought to have been built sometime after the middle of the Unified Silla period.
