Stone Standing Buddha in Jeungchon-ri, Sangju
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Enshrined at Yonghwasa Temple in Sangju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, this stone standing Buddha, 1.98 metres tall, is carved from a single stone together with its halo, and is so worn that its finer details can no longer be closely examined. The head cannot be clearly made out but appears bare, or shaved, and a large, topknot-shaped protrusion, the usnisha marking the crown of a Buddha, rises prominently near the top of the head. The face is long and full; the features are indistinct, yet the overall impression is composed. The body is neat, and the drapery falling over both shoulders is rendered simply. The halo, which represents the light radiating from the Buddha's body, is likewise heavily worn, and only faint traces of a flame pattern can be made out at its edge. With its composed body but somewhat stiffer, more realistic features, this statue reflects the trend of standing stone Buddhas from the late Unified Silla period.
