Stone Seated Buddha in Bogyong-dong, Sangju
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This stone seated Buddha stands roughly midway up the eastern slope of Wangsan Mountain, known as a noted mountain of Sangju. It originally stood at 358 Bogyong-dong, Sangju, but was moved to its present location in October 1975. The face, its nose slightly damaged, is round and full; the narrowly opened eyes and small, plump lips give it a warm yet composed, human quality. The shoulders are markedly narrowed, and although the right hand is missing, the way the two hands appear to overlap suggests that the right hand originally clasped the index finger of the left. The robe, wrapped thickly around the whole body, forms a symmetrical fan shape over both shoulders, and its parallel folds are rendered softly, if somewhat formulaically. Overall the statue has a soft, full appearance, but the formulaic treatment of the drapery folds suggests that it was made during the Goryeo period.
