East and West Three-story Stone Pagodas at Wolgwangsa Temple Site, Hapcheon
합천 월광사지 동·서 삼층석탑 · 陜川 月光寺址 東·西 三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese twin pagodas stand to the east and west on the site of Wolgwangsa Temple, each with the typical form of a three-storey pagoda body set on a two-tier foundation. On both the upper and lower tiers of the foundation, pillar-shaped carvings are placed at the corners and centre of each face. Corner pillars are likewise carved on each storey of the pagoda body, and the eaves stones each have five tiers of supporting brackets on their undersides. Overall the two pagodas are very similar, but the east pagoda uses relatively more stones in the construction of its foundation for its overall scale, while the west pagoda, which had collapsed and broken apart, shows traces of damage from having been re-erected in recent times. In addition, the centre of each face of the foundation bears a carved pillar-shaped relief: the west pagoda has two, the east pagoda one. Although both are pagodas of the Unified Silla period, they differ slightly from one another in the arrangement and style of their various parts despite their overall similarity, suggesting that they were built at slightly different times.
