Sutra Wrapper of Songgwangsa Temple, Suncheon
순천 송광사 경질 · 順天 松廣寺 經帙

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Buddhist craft object made to store scrolls of scripture. Thin strips of bamboo were woven together with coloured thread into a rectangular form, and triangular pieces of silk were attached at the ends with cords so that the scripture could be rolled up and tied. The bamboo was woven with coloured thread into floral patterns, silk bearing a vajra pattern, referring to the ritual thunderbolt implement of Buddhist practice, was wrapped around all four sides, and paper was pasted on the back. Although the piece as a whole is considerably damaged, the patterns rendered in various coloured threads remain intricate and well preserved. It is a valuable object, being the only one of its kind known to survive in Korea.
