According to the temple's records, Gaesimsa Temple was built by State Preceptor Hyegam in the fifth year of Queen Jindeok of Silla and the fourteenth year of King Uija of Baekje, but Queen Jindeok's fifth year (651) and King Uija's fourteenth year (654) are different years. Gaesimsa Temple is said to have been built by State Preceptor Hyegam in the fourteenth year of King Uija of Baekje (654). Records found when the Daeungjeon Hall was dismantled and repaired in 1941 show that it was rebuilt in the fifteenth year of King Seongjong of Joseon (1484). The present building is thought to retain almost the same form it had at the time of that rebuilding. The Daeungjeon Hall of Gaesimsa Temple is three bays wide at the front and three bays deep at the side. The roof is a matbae roof, a gable roof that forms the shape of the Chinese character 人 (person) when viewed from the side, and it is built in the dapo style, in which the bracket sets supporting the eaves are placed not only on top of the columns but also between them. In its basic structural composition, this building forms an important contrast with the Geungnakjeon Hall of Muwisa Temple in Gangjin (a National Treasure), a representative building in the jusimpo style — with bracket sets only above the columns — from the early Joseon period.
