Stele of Master Hyeongak at Yeongoksa Temple, Gurye
구례 연곡사 현각선사탑비 · 求禮 鷰谷寺 玄覺禪師塔碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stele stands at Yeongoksa Temple and was erected to honour Master Hyeongak, a monk of the early Goryeo period. The body of the stele was lost during the Japanese invasions of 1592–1598, and only the base and capstone survive today. The stone tortoise supporting the stele is grand in appearance, with large, piercing eyes and a big mouth, and bears the head of a bearded dragon. The socket at the centre of its back, where the stele slab was inserted, is carved with niche-shaped (ansang) motifs and flower designs. The capstone resting on the base is carved with several dragons intertwined with one another, rendered with striking precision and realism. The stele's title is inscribed at the centre of the front face, identifying it as the memorial stele of Master Hyeongak. Records show that the stele was made in 979, the fourth year of King Gyeongjong of Goryeo.
