Stupa of Buddhist Monk Soyo at Yeongoksa Temple, Gurye
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Yeongoksa Temple was founded during the Unified Silla period by the monk Yeongi, and until the early Goryeo period it was renowned as a centre for Seon (meditation) practice. This stupa stands to the west of Yeongoksa Temple and enshrines the sari (relics) of the Buddhist monk Soyo. Centred on the body of the stupa, which holds the monk's relics, is a base below and a finial above, with every part built in an octagonal form. The base is divided into three tiers, each carved with a lotus design, and a distinctive feature is the thick support block placed above it to bear the weight of the stupa body. The main stone of the stupa body has a door shape carved on one side only, while the other sides are carved in relief with images of the Eight Guardian Deities (palbusinjung). The roof stone bears a large flower ornament at each of its eight corners, and the finial at the top has survived in relatively complete condition. Yeongoksa Temple has two other stupas besides this one; although less accomplished in form than those, this stupa is a fine work with beautifully proportioned parts. An inscription carved on the stupa body shows that it was erected in 1650, the first year of King Hyojong of Joseon.
