Ojukheon House, Gangneung
강릉 오죽헌 · 江陵 烏竹軒

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe historic house where Sin Saimdang (1504–1551) and Yulgok Yi I (1536–1584) were born. Lady Sin Saimdang was an outstanding woman artist and a model of the wise mother and good wife, and her son Yulgok Yi I was a great scholar who, with Toegye Yi Hwang, stood as one of the twin peaks of Joseon learning. Ojukheon was built by Choe Chi-un (1390–1440), a scholar-official of Joseon. It is three bays wide and two deep, with a hipped-and-gabled roof. Seen from the front, the two bays on the left served as a wooden-floored hall and the one on the right was made into an ondol room. The members supporting the eaves are of the simple ikgong type, projecting like a bird's beak. It is counted among the older surviving houses in Korea, a building with a long history.
