Janggoksa Temple, located on Chilgapsan Mountain, is said to have been founded by State Preceptor Bojo in the late Silla period. Its detailed history is not recorded, but the temple was rebuilt in 1777, the first year of King Jeongjo of Joseon, and underwent major repairs in 1866, the third year of Emperor Gojong, as well as in 1906 and 1960, bringing it to its present form. The temple has an unusual layout with two Daeungjeon halls, upper and lower, set one above the other along the terrain. The upper and lower halls are positioned so as to be staggered from one another, with the Lower Daeungjeon Hall set at a considerably lower elevation than the Upper Daeungjeon Hall, facing south-east. The Lower Daeungjeon Hall was built in the mid-Joseon period and measures three kan across the front and two kan on the side. Viewed from the side, the roof is a gable roof (matbaejibung) in the shape of the character for "person" (人), and it is built in the tapo style, with decorative bracket structures supporting the eaves placed both above the columns and between them. Combining a plain gable roof with the ornate tapo style is a rare example. Inside the hall, unlike the Upper Daeungjeon Hall, which has a brick floor, this hall has a wooden floor, and the altar enshrines the Gilt-bronze Seated Bhaisajyaguru Buddha of Janggoksa Temple, Cheongyang (Treasure), which is known to date from the late Goryeo period.
