Imcheonggak House, Andong
안동 임청각 · 安東 臨淸閣

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krImcheonggak House is a residence built in 1519, the 14th year of King Jungjong of Joseon, by Yi Myeong, who had served as an assistant section chief in the Ministry of Justice; it was also the home of Yi Sang-ryong, the first Head of State of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in Shanghai. The house sits on the eastern foot of Yeongnamsan Mountain, facing south in an auspicious site with a mountain at its back and the Nakdonggang River before it. When the Jungang Line railway was laid, more than 50 kan (bays) of the servants' quarters and outbuildings were demolished, reducing the house to its present size; even so, the imposing servants' quarters visible over the adjoining wall from the road give a sense of what was once known as a "99-kan house". Among the remaining buildings, Gunjajeong Pavilion, which is well preserved and designated as a treasure, is the detached quarters of Imcheonggak, a pavilion-style building with a "丁"-shaped floor plan built in the mid-Joseon period. It measures three bays across the front and two bays along the side, with a hip-and-gable roof that, seen from the side, resembles the shape of the character 八 (eight). At its centre is a south-facing wooden-floored hall, and to its west is an attached T-shaped heated room. The interior is made up of four rooms. A narrow veranda with a railing runs around the building, and access is by stone steps set at two points.
