Stone Seated Buddha in Yongjangsagok Valley of Namsan Mountain, Gyeongju
경주 남산 용장사곡 석조여래좌상 · 慶州 南山 茸長寺谷 石造如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis statue looks down upon the site of Yongjangsa Temple, once one of the largest temples across the whole of Namsan Mountain in Gyeongju. The head has been lost, and only the hands and part of the body remain; the Buddha figure is relatively small in proportion to its pedestal. The shoulders are moderate in width, and the overall body, without exaggerated volume, appears realistic, as though modelled on the posture of an actual monk. The robe covers both shoulders, and its folds flow down over the top of the pedestal, rendered so realistically that they resemble lace. The pedestal, set on a natural rock base, is an unusual round form, distinctive enough to be mistaken for a peculiar three-storey pagoda, with a lotus design carved into its uppermost tier. Beyond the unusual pedestal, the realistic expression of the Buddha figure itself raises the quality of the work, and it is a celebrated statue closely associated with the renowned monk Daehyeon, who appears in the Samguk yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms). As it is thought to have been made during Daehyeon's active years, it is presumed to date from the mid-eighth century.
