Stupa of Buddhist Monk Nangwon at Bohyeonsa Temple, Gangneung
강릉 보현사 낭원대사탑 · 江陵 普賢寺 朗圓大師塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the stupa, a reliquary tower enshrining the sarira (relics) of the Buddhist monk Nangwon, standing at Bohyeonsa Temple. It is octagonal in plan. Having once collapsed, it was restored at the entrance to the temple, then in 1991 moved back to its original site near the mountain summit. The pedestal supporting the body of the stupa originally consisted of three stones, but the middle stone is now missing, so the upper stone rests directly on the lower one. One face of the main body of the stupa is carved with the shapes of a door and a lock. The roof stone is rather thick, with a steep slope, and traces remain at each of its eight corners where floral ornaments were once attached. A finial sits atop the roof stone. As the stele for Nangwon was erected in 940, the 23rd year of King Taejo of Goryeo, this stupa is thought to have been built at the same time.
