Gilt-bronze Standing Sakyamuni Buddha Triad with Inscription of “Jeong Ji-won”
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a Buddhist triad in which the Buddha and bodhisattva figures were cast together on a single mandorla, and it is now held in the Buyeo National Museum. On the back of the mandorla is an inscription stating that a man named Jeong Ji-won had the image made in gold for his deceased wife, so that she might travel well to the afterlife. The main Buddha's face is oval and full-fleshed, with large, clearly outlined eyes, nose and mouth that give it a fresh, open look. The robe draped over both shoulders falls heavily in U-shaped folds, and the ends of the robe hanging over both arms extend far out to the sides like a bird's wing feathers. The palms of the hands face forward, with the fingertips pointing downward. At either end of the mandorla, which represents the light radiating from the Buddha's entire body, stand two attendant bodhisattvas with palms joined in prayer. The bodhisattva on the right is carved in the same style as the main Buddha, its long flowing robe forming the edge of the mandorla. Only the face of the bodhisattva on the left survives; the rest of the body has broken away. Above the head halo is carved a small figure of a Buddha seated in a lotus flower, making an offering. In its sculptural style and mode of expression, this Buddha belongs to the same lineage as the Goguryeo Gilt-bronze Standing Buddha Inscribed with the Seventh Year of Yeon-ga (National Treasure), both having absorbed the Buddhist sculptural style current in China during the Northern Wei period. It belongs to the same stylistic group as the Gilt-bronze Buddha Triad Inscribed with the Gyemi Year (National Treasure) and the Gilt-bronze Buddha Triad Inscribed with the Sinmyo Year (National Treasure), but its carving technique is somewhat inferior, its patterns are simplified, and its sculptural vitality is much reduced compared with those works.
