Stone Standing Buddha Triad in Eumnae-ri, Cheongyang
청양 읍내리 석조여래삼존입상 · 靑陽 邑內里 石造如來三尊立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krAn independent image with its own halo and pedestal, this statue forms a triad of Buddha and two attendant bodhisattvas. The main Buddha has a commanding physique, with a large topknot-shaped hair bun and an almost rectangular face that gives a powerful impression. The shoulders are broad and imposing, and the body, glimpsed here and there through the drapery, likewise conveys strength and dignity. The robe draped over both shoulders falls in U-shaped folds from chest to ankles, with the hem of an inner garment showing between the legs. The halo, symbolising the light radiating from the Buddha's body, is boat-shaped and carved from the same stone as the statue, but is so badly damaged that its detailed decoration can no longer be made out. The left attendant bodhisattva has likewise been restored after breaking from the left shoulder to the right waist; its face is of the same type as the main Buddha's but much softer, and the waist is turned slightly to the left, drawing the body's centre toward the main Buddha. Its robe flares widely at the hem, giving a heavy, ponderous effect. The right attendant bodhisattva matches the left in every respect except that its outline is rounder and more youthful. The dignified stance, powerful modelling of the body, and flowing lines of the legs all show considerable skill, but the flattened treatment of the body and the formalised carving technique suggest that this is a work of the early Goryeo period.
