Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Lotus Sutra, often abbreviated as "Beophwagyeong", teaches as its central idea that the path to becoming a buddha is open to everyone. As the fundamental scripture of the Cheontae Order, it exerted, together with the Hwaeom school, great influence on the establishment of Buddhist thought in Korea. This book is a commentary on the twenty-fifth of the Lotus Sutra's twenty-eight chapters, the "Universal Gate" chapter on the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara, rendered into accessible language by Sahyo of Song China; it measures 26 cm in height and 35 cm in width. The "Universal Gate" chapter, part of the Lotus Sutra, relates how Avalokitesvara saves sentient beings. It was carved and printed by the Kan'gyeong Dogam, an office set up in 1461, the 7th year of King Sejo of Joseon, to translate Buddhist scriptures into Hangeul and publish them, taking as its source text the Buddhist canon compiled by State Preceptor Daegak Uicheon of Goryeo. Unlike other texts, it is distinctive in summarising its content in tabular form, so that the number of characters per line is irregular and there are no boundaries marking off individual sentences. A colophon at the end of the book states that it was produced in 1099, the 4th year of King Sukjong of Goryeo, but since its carving style and paper quality match those of the Songgwangsa geumgang banyagyeongso gaehyeoncho (a Treasure), printed in 1461, the 7th year of King Sejo, it appears to have been reprinted at that time.
