Buddhist scripture is broadly divided into the Three Baskets of sutra, vinaya and abhidharma; of these, "abhidharma" refers to a systematic explanation of the Buddha's teachings. The Abhidharmasamuccaya sets out the Buddha's teaching on nirvana; the text to which Sthiramati added commentary, and which Xuanzang translated into Chinese, is known as the Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyakhya. This particular book is a further commentary on the Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyakhya added by Hyeonbeom of Silla, in which volumes 13 and 14 of the original sixteen have each been bound as a separate book. A note at the end records that it was produced in 1093, the tenth year of King Seonjong of Goryeo, showing that it was originally compiled as part of the gyojang, a supplementary collection of Buddhist commentaries assembled in Goryeo. This copy was printed during the reign of King Sejo of Joseon at the Ganggyeongdogam, an office set up in 1461, the seventh year of King Sejo, to render Buddhist scriptures into Hangeul and publish them; using the gyojang text as its original, the office re-carved it onto woodblocks and printed it afresh.
