Jeongyodang Lecture Hall of Dosanseowon Confucian Academy, Andong
안동 도산서원 전교당 · 安東 陶山書院 典敎堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA seowon was a private educational institution of the Joseon period where sacrificial rites were held in honour of eminent scholars and where Confucian studies were pursued. Dosanseowon was first established to commemorate the scholarship and virtuous conduct of Yi Hwang (1501–1570), better known by his pen name Toegye. Within the academy, Jeongyodang served as the lecture hall where students cultivated themselves and were educated; to the left and right of its front courtyard stand Dongjae and Seojae, the students' dormitories. Jeongyodang was built in 1574, the seventh year of King Seonjo of Joseon, and repaired in 1969; it measures four kan across the front and two kan to the side. Viewed from the side, its roof is an ornate hip-and-gable roof shaped like the character for "eight", and the building contains both heated ondol rooms and a wooden-floored daecheong hall. Though very simply built, the signboard reading "Dosanseowon", bestowed on the academy by King Seonjo, is said to have been written by the celebrated calligrapher Han Seok-bong in the king's presence.
