Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a rock-carved Buddha triad, cut into a cliff face beside a river, showing the principal Buddha with attendant bodhisattvas standing to either side. The principal Buddha has a considerably large frame and a solemn, dignified appearance. Its large nose, closed mouth, and round, full face convey a sense of strong will. The chest is broad, and the robe, draped over both shoulders and flowing down, gives a similarly dignified impression. The natural rock face has been used as it is, carved with a halo decorated with lotus and flame patterns and a high-relief lotus pedestal — features that harmonise well with the statue's solemn character and lend it an even more imposing air. The bodhisattva on the left has a round, gentle face. The chest is broad; the left arm is draped over the shoulder and the right hand rests on the abdomen, conveying a strong, masculine quality. The bodhisattva on the right follows almost the same technique as the one on the left, differing only in that it wears a jewelled crown, holds a jewelled bottle in its hand, and has both hands joined together. This rock-carved Buddha is highly regarded as a realistic image that well illustrates the trends in sculpture of the Unified Silla period.
