Multi-story Stone Pagoda of Silleuksa Temple, Yeoju
여주 신륵사 다층석탑 · 驪州 神勒寺 多層石塔

Silleuksa was given the job of tending Sejong's tomb after it came to Yeoju, and this pagoda stands in front of the main hall. It follows the general Unified Silla and Goryeo shape but is put together quite differently: every part, from the base to the body stones, is cut from a single slab. It is worth going close. Lotus petals are carved around the top of the bottom stone. The corner pillars of the lower base are conventional, but a wave pattern has been raised between them, which is unusual. On the upper base the corner pillars carry flower shapes and each face is cut deeply with dragons — the work of a confident carver. The roof stones are thin, with a single shallow course beneath each and a light lift at the four corners. Part of an eighth roof and body survive, so it once stood higher than it does.
