Monument for the Construction of Inyangsa Temple, Changnyeong
창녕 인양사 조성비 · 昌寧 仁陽寺 造成碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stele records in detail the dates of construction and the provisions used for the bronze bell, pagoda and main hall of Inyangsa Temple and several related temples, covering forty years of work from the casting of the Inyangsa bell in 771, the seventh year of King Hyegong of Unified Silla, to the erection of this stele in 810, the second year of King Heondeok of Silla. The stele consists of a body set upright on a rectangular base stone, topped with a large roof stone. On the back of the stele is carved the figure of a monk, thought to have been made to commemorate a monk associated with the temple's construction at the time. The monk has a youthful face and a compassionate expression, and the soft lines imitating the human body clearly show the carving technique of the eighth to ninth centuries. The script of the inscription departs from the standard regular script (haeseo) that was popular at the time, showing a variety of forms, allowing the development of new calligraphic styles to be traced. Although the stele's form departs from the typical stele shape of the period, and it is doubtful whether the unusually large roof stone is original, it holds special significance as a stele recording temple construction during the height of Unified Silla.
