Bell-shaped Stupa of Buddhist Monk Boje at Silleuksa
여주 신륵사 보제존자석종 · 驪州 神勒寺 普濟尊者石鍾

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the sarira stupa — a stupa enshrining the cremated relics, or sarira, of a Buddhist monk — of the monk Boje, kept on the hill behind Silleuksa Temple. It consists of a bell-shaped stupa body raised on a two-tiered base, set upon a broad, single-storey foundation. The foundation is built up with stacked stones to form a wide platform, with steps set at the front and on both sides. The stupa body itself is left unadorned, and at its top rises a large finial in the shape of a lotus bud, carved with a flame pattern. The stupa was erected in 1379, the fifth year of King U of Goryeo. Boje had been serving as abbot of Hoeamsa Temple in Yangju when, travelling to Miryang on the king's orders, he passed away here at Silleuksa Temple; his disciples then set aside a site on the hill behind the temple and raised this stupa there. It is a fine example of the bell-shaped stupa style of the late Goryeo period.
