Stele of Buddhist Monk Boje at Silleuksa Temple, Yeoju
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is the stele for the stupa of Buddhist Monk Boje, Naong, enshrined at Silleuksa Temple. Boje Naong was a monk who sought to reunify the Seon and Gyo schools and revive Buddhism; while serving as abbot of Hoeamsa Temple in Yangju, he received a royal order to travel to Miryang, but died at Silleuksa Temple on the way. His disciples then set aside a site within the temple grounds and erected a stone stupa enshrining his relics together with this stele. The stele has a body set upon a three-tiered base, with a roof stone placed on top; the upper surface of the base is carved with a lotus design. The marble stele body has granite pillars set up on either side, and the roof stone is carved with eaves-tiles and tile-troughs like the tiled roof of a wooden building. At the end of the front face of the stele, rather than at the beginning as was usual, are recorded the titles and names of the composer and calligrapher of the text. The stele was erected in 1379, the fifth year of King U of Goryeo; the inscription was composed by the noted literary figure of the age, Yi Saek, and written by the celebrated calligrapher Han Su in a gentle regular script. Overall, the work shows the simplified forms characteristic of the late Goryeo period.
