Stone Lantern in Front of the Stupa of Buddhist Monk Boje at Silleuksa Temple, Yeoju
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is an octagonal stone lantern standing on a hill to the north-west of Silleuksa Temple. Centred on the light chamber (hwasaseok), where the flame was lit, it has a base made up of three parts below, and a roof stone and finial above. The entire surface of the base is decorated with carved floral patterns. On each face of the light chamber a rainbow-shaped window was cut, and in the remaining space images of flying celestial beings (bicheon) and imugi (hornless dragon-like creatures) were carved. The roof stone is thick, but the light, lively upward curve at its eight corners eases the sense of heaviness. It was erected in 1379, the fifth year of King U of Goryeo, together with the stone stupa and stone stele of the Buddhist monk Boje. It is a valuable relic whose date is precisely known, and it displays a style representative of the late Goryeo period.
