KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This white porcelain jar with openwork peony and scroll design in underglaze cobalt blue is a Joseon-period white porcelain jar 26.7 cm high and 14.25 cm in mouth diameter, its body carved in openwork. The mouth is straight, and the body flares sharply out from the shoulder before gradually narrowing, forming an inner and outer double-wall structure. The inner jar is undecorated, while the outer jar is pierced through in openwork, depicting fully bloomed peonies with their stems and leaves over the whole body. The shoulder is painted with a scrolling vine design in cobalt blue, and a raised floral band is applied below the waist. The piece appears to have originally been made as a flower vase, and the outer jar has the typical curved profile of Joseon jars. The peony flowers carved over the whole jar are realistically expressed, and the overall form conveys a bold yet quietly refined elegance. The glaze is a white porcelain glaze with a faint bluish tinge, presumed to have been produced at a kiln in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, operating from the late 18th century. Judging from the variety of openwork peony and wave designs found on brush holders of the period, the piece is thought to date from the late 18th century.
