Rock-carved Seated Buddha of Donghwasa Temple, Daegu
대구 동화사 마애여래좌상 · 大邱 桐華寺 磨崖如來坐像

This Buddha is carved on the rock face to the right of the entrance to Donghwasa Temple. Positioned high above the ground, it has the distinctive appearance of descending from the sky upon a cloud. The face is relatively full, conveying a sense of volume, though the detailed features are rendered flatly; the short neck has three folds, and the shoulders are straight. The right hand rests on the knee with the fingertips pointing down, while the left hand, palm upward, is placed before the navel. The robe covers both shoulders, showing regular, thinly carved parallel folds. The halo, representing the light radiating from the body, is shaped like a boat with sharp ends; the outer edge uses a flame design throughout, and the head halo and body halo are each rendered with two lines. The pedestal appears to float upon clouds, the cloud pattern rendered so realistically that it gives the Buddha a vivid sense of life. Judging from the serene face and the highly decorative pedestal and halo, the work is thought to date from the ninth century, the late Unified Silla period.
