Stone Standing Buddha of Haeinsa Temple, Hapcheon
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This stone standing Buddha, enshrined at Haeinsa Temple, has lost both its halo (gwangbae) and pedestal; its neck has been severed, its shoulders and both arms are broken, and its feet are missing. The bare head carries a small topknot-shaped protuberance (yukgye), and the long oval face is heavily worn and damaged. The body, disproportionately small in relation to the head, shows almost no modelling, giving it the feel of a stone pillar. The robe covering the narrow, angular shoulders falls in diagonal lines from either side that meet at the centre to form a sharp V shape, then changes to a U shape near the waist and flows down between the legs. The right hand is raised before the chest with the elbow bent, while the left hand hangs down, both arms held close against the body. With its unbalanced bodily proportions and flat, formalised drapery folds, this Buddha statue exemplifies the sculptural style of the late Unified Silla period.
