The original title of the Shurangama Sutra (the Sutra of the Heroic One) is the long title Daebuljeong Yeorae Mirin Sujeung Youi Jebosal Manhaeng Suneungeomgyeong, and it is a scripture that monks are required to study in the course of their training. Its central teaching is that the Buddha's words should not merely be understood intellectually but realised fully within oneself, thereby gaining their power. This Volume 10 of the Shurangama Sutra, transcribed in silver characters on paper made of hemp fibre, is the last of the sutra's ten volumes. It is in an accordion-fold format that opens out like a folding screen; when folded, it measures 30.5 cm in height and 11.2 cm in width. The cover is now missing, and the silver characters have faded, taking on a slightly blackish colour. At the very end of the volume there is a record stating that it was made in 1356 by Yi Bang-han to pray for the repose of his deceased mother's soul. There is also a record giving the pronunciation of difficult Chinese characters, which appears to apply to all ten volumes of the sutra. Although the calligraphy is not of a particularly high standard, the clarity of its date of production and its use of hemp-fibre paper add to its value.
