Five-story Stone Pagoda in Balsan-ri, Gunsan
군산 발산리 오층석탑 · 群山 鉢山里 五層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda originally stood at the site of Bongnimsa Temple in Wanju and was later moved and re-erected at its present location. It was built as a five-story body rising above a two-tiered pedestal, but one story of the body has since been lost, leaving only four stories today. Both the upper and lower tiers of the pedestal have pillar-shaped carvings at the corners and centre of each face, and the four-story body above likewise has pillar shapes carved at the four corners of each storey's body stone. The roof stones have a steep slope, with the eave ends curving slightly upward, and each rests on a three-tiered base, a feature characteristic of Goryeo-period pagodas. Part of the finial survives at the top, but it appears to be a later addition. The pagoda as a whole is well balanced and clearly displays the simple beauty typical of Goryeo pagodas.
