Pihyangjeong Pavilion, Jeongeup
정읍 피향정 · 井邑 披香亭

Built as a place of rest amid nature, Pihyangjeong Pavilion is the foremost pavilion in the Honam region. There is a story that Choe Chi-won built it during the reign of King Heonan of Unified Silla (r. 857–861), but the exact date of construction is not known for certain. According to records, the magistrate Lee Ji-goeng rebuilt it during the reign of King Gwanghaegun of Joseon, and the magistrate Park Sung-go enlarged the building during the reign of King Hyeonjong. It is said that the pavilion was expanded to its present size by the magistrate Yu Geun in the 42nd year of King Sukjong's reign (1716). It has since been partially repaired on several occasions, and its traditional multicoloured paintwork (dancheong) was last repainted in 1974. The pavilion measures five bays across the front and four bays along the side, with a hip-and-gable roof that forms the shape of the character "eight" (八) when viewed from the side. The bracket structure supporting the eaves is simply carved to resemble a bird's beak protruding outward. All four sides of the building are open, allowing views in every direction, and the balustrade is finished with a close row of carved short posts. Inside, the ceiling is mostly an exposed-rafter ceiling that reveals the roof timbers, but part of it, between the left and right bays, is finished as a coffered ceiling to conceal the structure, a notable detail. Boards inscribed with poems by the poets and scholars who visited this pavilion also hang inside, adding to the building's dignity. As one of the representative pavilions of the Joseon period, Pihyangjeong clearly shows the wooden-architecture style of the mid-Joseon era, making it an important resource for research into architectural history.
