Stone Seated Bodhisattva at Sudoam Hermitage of Cheongamsa Temple, Gimcheon
김천 청암사 수도암 석조보살좌상 · 金泉 靑巖寺 修道庵 石造菩薩坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a Goryeo-period stone seated Buddha, 1.54 m tall, enshrined in the Yakgwangjeon Hall of Sudoam Hermitage on Cheongamsan Mountain. It wears a cylindrical crown on its head, which gives it the appearance of a bodhisattva, but the presence of a halo and a pedestal, together with the treatment of the body, suggest that it in fact represents a Buddha. The face is elegant and refined, but heavy weathering makes it difficult to make out the details clearly. The folds of the robe draped over both shoulders are rendered in a schematic manner, and the hands are joined together on the lap, holding a wish-fulfilling jewel. The halo, which represents the light radiating from the Buddha's body, is carved with lotus, vine-scroll and flame patterns. The rectangular pedestal on which the statue sits is carved with a fully opened lotus flower on the upper part and an inverted lotus on the lower part. The schematic treatment of the robe folds and the formulaic rendering of the halo and pedestal suggest that this work was made in the early Goryeo period.
