Three-story Stone Pagoda at Bungmireugam Hermitage of Daeheungsa Temple, Haenam
해남 대흥사 북미륵암 삼층석탑 · 海南 大興寺 北彌勒庵 三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda stands at Bungmireugam Hermitage near the summit of Duryunsan Mountain, comprising a three-storey pagoda body erected on a two-tiered platform. On the platform, pillar shapes are carved at each of the four corners and in the centre. The pagoda body has its body stones and roof stones each carved from a single block, with pillar shapes carved at the four corners of each body stone. The thin, broad roof stones have a different number of stepped supports on their underside at each storey: four steps on the first and second storeys, and three on the third. Of the finial ornaments, the noban (a plate-shaped base) and anghwa (an upward-facing lotus-shaped ornament) survive. It is remarkable that a pagoda of such orderly composition should be found at Haenam, at the very southern tip of the Korean peninsula. Although the style is simplified in certain respects, the pagoda has an overall sense of stability, and it is presumed to have been built in the early Goryeo period.
