Yaksajeon Hall of Songgwangsa Temple, Suncheon
순천 송광사 약사전 · 順天 松廣寺 藥師殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSonggwangsa Temple, on Jogyesan Mountain, is one of the three great temples of Korea and has a long and distinguished history. The name "Songgwang" is said to derive from Songgwangsan, the old name for Jogyesan Mountain, but there is no exact record of when the temple was founded. Yaksajeon Hall enshrines Bhaisajyaguru, the Buddha of Medicine who cures all illness, and is the smallest worship hall at Songgwangsa Temple. It is simple in form, with a single bay on both the front and sides, and its roof is a hip-and-gable (paljak) roof that, seen from the side, forms the shape of the Chinese character for "eight" (八). As the smallest worship hall surviving in Korea today, Yaksajeon Hall is estimated, on the basis of its carving technique, to date from around the 17th century, in the mid-Joseon period.
