KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

Yangjindang was the house of Ryu Un-ryong (pen name Gyeomam, 1539–1601), and it is a very old head house of the Pungsan Ryu clan. A board bearing the name "Ibam-gotaek" ("Old House of Ibam"), borrowing the pen name of Ryu Jung-yeong (1515–1573), also hangs on the building; Ryu Jung-yeong was Ryu Un-ryong's father. The name Yangjindang itself derives from the childhood name of Ryu Un-ryong's sixth-generation descendant, Ryu Yeong (1687–1761). The house measures four bays across the front and three bays along the side, with a hip-and-gable roof that forms the shape of the character "eight" (八) when seen from the side. The three bays on the right form the main hall (daecheong), and the single bay on the left is an ondol room heated by an underfloor flue system; a narrow veranda and balustrade run around the outside, giving the building the appearance of a raised pavilion, and doors were fitted to the main hall so that all three bays can be opened. Inside, the ceiling is finished as an exposed-rafter ceiling that reveals the roof timbers, and several boards hang together, one of them bearing the name "Yangjindang." Some of the interior woodwork is executed with exceptional skill, and the house is one of the larger byeoldang, detached annex halls, of the Joseon period built as an ordinary private residence.
