Stone Ice Storage, Changnyeong
창녕 석빙고 · 昌寧 石氷庫

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krWhat looks like a hill beside the road opposite Myeongdeok Elementary School in Changnyeong County is in fact this Seokbinggo. A seokbinggo is a storehouse built of stone for keeping ice, usually constructed near a river or stream. It is laid out running north–south, at right angles to a stream flowing to the west, with its entrance facing south so that ice could be moved in and out easily. A staircase leads down from the entrance; the floor slopes and is square and flat, with a drainage hole in the north corner to let water escape. Inside, well-dressed stones are stacked to form four rainbow-shaped ribs rising from both sides at intervals, and between each rib long stones are laid crosswise to complete the ceiling. Ventilation holes are also placed at intervals in the ceiling to let outside air circulate. According to the inscription on a stele standing at the entrance, this Seokbinggo was built in 1742, the eighteenth year of King Yeongjo of Joseon, by Sin Seo, the local magistrate at the time; the style of each part clearly reflects the character of the late Joseon period, supporting this dating.
