Three-story Stone Pagoda of Daeheungsa Temple, Haenam
해남 대흥사 삼층석탑 · 海南 大興寺 三層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda stands in front of Eungjinjeon Hall at Daeheungsa Temple. According to tradition, it is a sari (relic) pagoda enshrining relics of Sakyamuni Buddha that the Silla monk Jajang brought back from China. In form, it is a typical Silla-style stone pagoda, with a three-storey body erected on a two-tiered base. Both the lower and upper tiers of the base have pillar-shaped carvings at the centre and corners of each side, and the corners of the body stone of each storey are likewise carved with pillar shapes. The roof stones have thick eaves, their upper surfaces curving lightly, and the underside of each has four-tiered supports. At the top, the finial consists of a noban (a large finial base, here so big it resembles a body stone) topped with a bokbal (an inverted bowl-shaped ornament), an anghwa (an upward-facing lotus-shaped ornament) and a boryun (a wheel-shaped ornament). Compared with the first-storey body stone, the height of the body stones from the second storey upward decreases considerably, though their width barely changes. Overall it follows the Unified Silla stone pagoda style, but the reduction of the base's central pillar carving to a single one, and the four-tiered roof-stone supports, suggest it was built in the late Unified Silla period. Together with the Three-storey Stone Pagoda of Bungmireugam Hermitage at Daeheungsa Temple, Haenam, built near the summit of Daedunsan Mountain, it holds important value in showing that the Unified Silla stone pagoda style spread as far as the southwestern tip of the peninsula.
