Stone Ice Storage, Cheongdo
청도 석빙고 · 淸道 石氷庫

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krAn ice storage is a storehouse dug into the ground for keeping ice. Only four semicircular arches that once linked the two side walls survive here, and the ceiling has collapsed entirely, leaving the structure incomplete. Even so, among the ice storages surviving in Korea today it is the second largest after the one in Gyeongju, and one of the oldest in date of construction. It is a long structure running east–west, with the entrance on the west side; following the steps inside, a sloping floor comes into view. A drainage channel runs down the centre, with an opening on the east side through which water was let out into a small stream outside the storage. Ventilation holes are thought to have been made, but their location can no longer be identified. A stone monument stands to the left of the entrance. Its front face records the number of workers mobilised for the construction, the materials used and the cost, while the back records the date the monument was erected together with the names of those involved. Among these is a record of the year 'gyesa', from which the storage is presumed to have been built in 1713, the thirty-ninth year of King Sukjong of Joseon.
