These are the artifacts of Yi Sun-sin, kept at Hyeonchungsa Shrine in Asan, South Chungcheong Province. General Yi Sun-sin (1545–1598) passed the military examination in 1576, the ninth year of King Seonjo, and at the age of 47 became Left Naval Commander of Jeolla Province. Foreseeing the Japanese invasion, he stockpiled military supplies and built turtle ships. In 1592, the following year, the Imjin War broke out, and by carefully analysing the situation before engaging the enemy he won brilliant victories at the naval battles of Hansando, Okpo, Myeongnyang and elsewhere, but he died after being struck by a stray enemy bullet at the Battle of Noryang (1598). His noble spirit and leadership marked him as the most outstanding general of the Imjin War, a figure who remains forever in the nation's history; after his death he was given the posthumous title Chungmu, and his Nanjung ilgi (War Diary) and personal effects are now kept at Hyeonchungsa Shrine. His relics include one jade ornament (okno), apparently worn as a decoration on top of a gat (traditional horsehair hat); a belt and belt case, two sets in two pieces; and two sets of peach-shaped cups with stands. The Artifacts Related to Yi Sun-sin were used by him during the Imjin War; they are objects imbued with his noble spirit and, at the same time, important material for examining the society of his time.
